St. Francis Episcopal Church celebrated a special weekend honoring their parish namesake, Saint Francis of Assisi. The weekend began with an Italian Dinner on Friday, October 4 that is the actual calendar date for St. Francis Day. This year 5000 Franciscans and friends from the Franciscan region of Sicily have been invited and will be gathering in Assisi, Italy, to celebrate the day.
St. Francis' Pauma Valley festivities were a bit smaller than in Assisi!! But all enjoyed the potluck dinner. Father Robert Eaton shared pictures of this recent trip to Assisi with his wife, Sue.

The Annual Blessing of the Animals took place on Saturday, October 5. Many dogs and one chicken were blessed. Then on Sunday, the whole parish joined in worship on Sunday, October 6 at 9:30. Songs and music of St. Francis was prominent. The choir returned from their summer hiatus.
Filling in the Gaps – Thanks to Renee, and Don!
The large cement squares leading into the Francis lawn and garden have been showing their age since installation many, many years ago. Uneven sections caused mostly by sinking were beginning to become a risk for ease of walking; the wood separators had mostly rotted out a while back.
Junior Warden Renee Meyst took on the first part of the “renewal” project by contracting cement sidewalk specialists to grind down the uneven portions (which allowed for the massive sections not to have to be pulled up, removed and repoured).
Don Kline then came in with pebbles and “magic” clear adhesive to fill in the large spaces in between the cement sections, which had originally been filled with wood slats. The separation allows for the cement sections to expand and contract without cracking.
Looking good, leading up to St. Francis Day Weekend!

A Stewardship Message for this week
For June 16, 2024, the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost, Proper 6
From the second lesson, 2nd Corinthians 5:10 :
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil.”
We are all accountable for all of the gifts God has given us – our time, our talent and our treasure; everything we have and everything we are. Each of us is accountable not only for our own life but for the lives of others as well. One day God will ask each of us what did we do with the gifts we were given. How will you respond?

Notes from the Ascension Day Evensong, May 9, 2024
Besides the UpLifting dessert provided by two of our attendees (Angel food cake topped with fresh strawberry slices and divine whipped cream), the Evensong provided the opportunity to celebrate the Ascension of Jesus, and offer prayers for the next phase of the Rector Search. Fr. Eaton provided the Litany for Discernment, and gave a homily connecting Ascension, Pentecost and the Sacrament of Confirmation (of which his anniversary is on Ascension).
Not wanting all in the parish to miss out on making use of the Litany, thus adding all of our prayers for this important transition moment in our "season of discernment," the Litany is added here by link. Please make use of it.
Litany for Discernment for congregation seeking new ordained leadership
Requests for the Ascension homily have been made, and it is available here:

Hosannah! Palm Sunday at St. Francis!
Holy Week was observed by the people of St. Francis by remembering Jesus’s joyous entry into Jerusalem, his final meal with his disciples, his betrayal, trial and cruxifiction. Easter Sunday will be celebrated with joy of Jesus’s resurrection and the promise that death is not the final word.
The Palm Sunday service started in the St. Francis Garden with the blessing of the palms. The parishioners processed with palms into the church. The service continued with a group reading of the Passion According to St. Mark
On Wednesday, March 27 at 12:00 noon. The Stations of the Cross were observed and spoken as participants prayerfully walked alongside Jesus and contemplated and experienced the moments from Jesus’ being sentenced to death until his burial. This prayer experience was be held outside in the gardens of St. Francis church. The Stations of the Cross will be available on Good Friday for private prayer.
Maundy Thursday services were held at 5:30 p.m on March 28th. A light meal with a Mediterranean theme was shared in the Parish Hall. The Maundy Thursday service then moved to the church where the liturgy focused on Jesus’s last supper with his disciples. Hand washing instead of foot washing was shared. Holy Eucharist followed. At the end of the service, the altar and the church were stripped of its linens and other adornments, in preparation for Good Friday.
Maundy Thursday dinner photos are below:
Sunday, March 10, was Rose Sunday, which included a very old tradition of the mid-Lent baking and eating of the Simnel Cake.

For dessert an Epiphany Cake was shared. The cake is one of Fr. Eaton's traditions, although not unknown to many at St Francis. Inside the cake were three items: a ring, a quarter, and a thimble. The person who "finds" the ring is the one who brings next year's cake. The thimble finder crafts/makes/acquires something for the benefit of the parish. The quarter finder uses that to invest over the year and brings the proceeds to the church next year as a donation.
Father Rob search for one of the items in his piece of cake but didn't find anything. "Finders were Audrey Veach, Debbie Balfour, and Marilyn Winebarger. |

Kathryn is the keeper of the Holy Chalice and Paten (the plate that holds the bread served for Holy Communion) from the country church where she was baptized. She asked Father Carr if these could be used for the service on her birthday. The pieces are engraved with images of grapes and wheat. She attended this church until the Spring of 1960 when she graduated high school.

Caring for the Future of Your Family, Your Church, and Your Favorite Charities

The following is a rubric in the Book of Common Prayer, page 445:
The Minister of the Congregation is directed to instruct the people, from time to time, about the duty of Christian parents to make prudent provision for the well-being of their families, and of all persons to make wills, while they are in health, arranging for the disposal of their temporal goods, not neglecting, if they are able, to leave bequests for religious and charitable uses.
As I was told a couple of times by a retired priest and authentic character who lived next to a funeral home: “I’ve never seen a Brink’s truck in a funeral procession.”

Perhaps you've gone past an Episcopal Church and wondered what goes on there. Perhaps you've heard a lot about Christianity from the media and you're wondering if what you've heard is even remotely accurate. The link above connects you to an article that may be of interest to you.

One of our parishioners, Andy Mathews found an article about the Episcopal Church and shared it with Fr. Fred Fr. Fred then got in touch with Fr. Steven Wilson, Rector of Grace Church, Carthage, MO and obtained his permission to adapt it for St. Francis. Fr. Fred also learned that it was from an original article had been adapted from a parish in New Zealand and that permission had been given to use the information in that article as well.

Hey! Where is our church sign?
Steve Much has been working with local artist, "Chris the Woodcutter" to repair our church sign. The sign was damaged due to a vehicle accident. The posts supporting the sign are being replaced as well. Hopefully the beautiful sign will soon be back indicating the location of our church. Her are some pictures of the "work in progress." |

A wonderful tribute to Martha Hankey was held on Sunday, August 28th. Martha will be relocating to live closer to her family in Northern California. Martha was presented with a prayer book and hymnal that was inscribed with kind words about her support and guidance to the St. Francis Episcopal Church. A potluck was held during the coffee hour with many of the good ol' St. Franics delights. Hugs, tears, and laughter were shared!
The Back Pack Distribution went smoothly on Tuesday, August 16th. The backpacks were loaded into the trunks of parishioners' cars. The students were waiting in front of the Pauma Valley Community Clinic. The students lined up at the car that was labeled with their school level. The boys and girls enjoyed picking out their own back packs and were excited when they looked inside. Parents loved the little backpacks with preschool supplies for the children ages 2-5. All of the backpacks were passed out within 15 minutes. Over 60 backpacks were shared with local school children. Inside each backpack were school supplies and a printed invitation to come to church or attend a family event at St. Francis Episcopal Church. Thank you to the people of St. Francis for donating backpacks and school supplies. Thank you for helping to back the backpacks Sunday after church. And thank you to those who helped distribute the backpacks on Tuesday. A big thank you to Jill Paolone for coordinating this outreach project with the Pauma Community Clinic. .

Change for change - shoes for Students
Loose change is collected on the little table by the entrance to the church.
Parishioners bring in their loose change and place it in the small plastic jar near the entrance to the church. The change is counted and used to purchase $25 gift cards from Payless Shoes. Students received shoe cards in January. Also, the first week of June, eleven gift cards were given to 9 students at Valley Center High School and to two students at Pauma School. These students will be able to use the cards to purchase shoes to wear for their graduation or promotions. The counseling office at the High School and the Principal at Pauma School distributed the shoe cards to students who needed them.

Fifth Tuesday was a Success!
St. Francis’ Fifth Tuesday Food Distribution was held on Dec. 29. In the past, the 5th Tuesday event would have help 30 families. This month the church organizers planned on providing a week's worth of food to 50 families. The need was greater! With the help of so many, the church was able to provide for 60 families!
Thank you to all who made donations of food. Monetary donations were used to purchase additional items so we had enough for the families.
The director of the Community Center next to the church had suggested additional items that are needed. So this month we were able to expand our offerings to include clean blankets, throws, afghans, baby blankets, new or used, personal hygiene products(shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, bars of soap), and socks for men, women, children.
Thank you to Jill Palone, Tom Burch, and Father Wes for your help in coordinating the program along with the staff from the Neighborhood Healthcare Pauma Valley clinic. Thank you to the parish members who assisted on the day of distribution. Many families left our church with healthy food and items to keep warm during this chilly time. Praise the lord!

Angel Tree 2015 - 102 Gifts!!!
The Angel Tree Outreach Project was a great success. The gifts were brought to church on December 13th and were offered to the Glory of God!
The gifts will be delivered this week to three different locations. The teen-age gifts will be brought to the Valley Center-Pauma District Office and were distributed to students at Valley Center High School. The Instructional Assistant who passed out the gifts said that the High School students were thrilled with their gifts. She said, "You should have seen their smiling faces. They loved their gifts!"
The toddler gifts are being brought to the Neighborhood Healthcare clinic to be given to young patients there.
The ages 5 - 12 gifts will be delivered to Pauma School on to be given to students at that school who may not have additional gifts coming to them. 56 gifts were passed out to students at the school.
So in total, St. Francis collected 102 gifts that were shared with local school children. The church family did some wonderful work in sharing the love of Christ this holiday season. The gifts were all wrapped beautifully and the children all felt so special. Joyful!
Such a wonderful outreach project. Blessings to all who participated in this project.
